維克多·謝閣蘭(Victor SEGALEN,1878 – 1919)[1],1878年1月14日生于法國布雷斯特(Brest),醫生、詩人、作家、學者。他還可以被稱為考古學家,攝影家、藝術理論家、語言學家、文學評論家、漢學家等等[2]。1902年,畢業于波爾多海軍衛校(École de Santé Navale de Bordeaux),獲得醫學博士學位[3]。現在波爾多第二大學(Université de Bordeaux II)以他的名字命名[4]。1919年5月21日,他於居所附近的郁勒郭森林(Huelgoat)意外辭世,原因未明[5]。

謝閣蘭以他對中國的考察記錄[6]、并由此而寫作散文詩集 Stèles(古今碑錄)而聞名[7,8]。他去世后,他的中國之行的有關筆記陸續出版[9]。1979年,法國發行了謝閣蘭誕辰一百周年紀念郵票[10]。

法國積美博物館(Musée Guimet)在簡介謝閣蘭時說[11]:『1909年他動身去“我的首都”北京,居住四年多後,1914年因一次大戰爆發返法。……謝閣蘭在這次與愛德華·沙畹(Édouard CHAVANNES, 1865 – 1918年)合作的考察中[12]除留下筆記外,還有速描和一些大型雕塑的照片[13],透過他在光線和取景顯出的天賦,使其成為中華帝國末世中最具才華的攝影家。中國在他的眼裡變成:“和諧差異之典範,世界多樣化之縮影”』。

我不確知謝閣蘭何時說的『“我的首都”北京』[11],是1909年吧[14]?但是因為 Timothy Billings 和 Christopher Bush 的注釋[7],我能揣測他心中的中國并得以沉思與他的沉思——“思無疆,思馬斯臧”……[15

校注文本來源:十三經注疏之毛詩正義,阮元(校刻),清嘉慶二十年至二十一年。阮元校刻所依據的原始版本為“宋本十三經注疏”。本文參校的是該書中華書局(北京)1980年版。

謝閣蘭詩集【Stèles(古今碑錄)】第63首詩是“CHAR EMPORTÉ 駧駧牡馬在垌之野”。注意他在這一首詩的標題引語中使用的詩經文本是“駧駧牡馬在之野”而非“駉駉牡馬在之野”[15, 16]!謝格蘭大約一定讀過理雅格(James LEGGE)的【詩經】譯本。而理雅格的翻譯藍本和我們今天所推崇的【詩經】經典文本是一致的,那就是阮元依據宋本重新校刻的【十三經注疏:毛詩正義】——“駉駉牡馬在之野……”

:dòng,【玉篇】馬疾走。【說文】馳馬洞去也。又動也。
:jiōng,【玉篇】與駫同,馬肥壯盛貌。

一字之差,詩意何其迥然!
……也許,謝格蘭看過這一張敦煌碎片(伯希和敦煌寫卷第3737號)[17,18]。

理雅格是不能對這一文本重新翻譯了,很遺憾。不過今后再版的【詩經】可以改正。再版的【康熙字典】、【辭海】也要修正所有引用了“駉駉牡馬在坰之野”的詞條。

The ultimate voyage
Christian RÉGNIER

Segalen left China for good early in 1918, having “sucked the sap, which everywhere else has dried up, and whose roots date back four thousand years.” He disembarked in Marseille in March 1918, in very poor physical condition. He went on to Paris for two months to acquire a specialist’s degree in medicine, and in September and October returned to Brest at the naval hospital to manage the Spanish flu epidemic, which he himself caught. Segalen ran a hospital department and noted: “we share the work, I have sixty patients today of whom ten will be dead tomorrow, but which ten? [...] and tomorrow fifty more are scheduled.” [3]

Overworked and extremely affected by the deaths of de Chavannes on January 29, and Debussy on March 25, and suffering from the consequences of having stopped smoking opium, of which he had been an addict since his naval medical school years, Segalen grew increasingly neurasthenic. He had to stop all his activities on November 12, and was hospitalized for an acute worsening of his condition in January 1919, at the Val-de-Grâce Military Hospital in Paris. He then traveled to Algeria, to spend two months of convalescence in the house of a friend—to no avail. On April 21, 1919, Segalen wrote a letter to his friend Jean Lartigue that included this self-diagnosis:

In case the thought crossed your mind, I can assure you that opium is absolutely not responsible [...] my increasing exhaustion corresponds to a year I spent by myself in the Far East, and the amount of work I brought back with me is good evidence. I can assure you that from my departure in December 1916, until Hanoi in August 1917, my smoking was practically nil. Thereafter, it was very minor, and spread over only a few weeks. Since then, there is nothing that you do not know about. In Algiers, I kept clear, despite offers. So we must look elsewhere. Syphilis, no. Tuberculosis, no. Anemia, no. Malaria, no. Recently, the very thorough examination by Dr March’adour and Dr Delahet gave me a clean bill of health. Thus I do not have any known detectable disease. And yet, it is as if I were seriously ill. I do not weigh myself any longer. I do not take any medicines. I simply note that life is slowly abandoning me. You can see that it is not a matter of opinion but a fact. [3,4,10]

He returned home to Brittany. On May 21, 1919, Segalen told his wife he was going out for a walk in the forest of Huelgoat. Two days later, she found him mortally wounded, bloodied, with an injury to his leg and a makeshift tourniquet—a last, unfortunately ineffectual, reflex of his medical training... His death was very probably caused by a sharp, cut-off sapling—though suicide has never been entirely ruled out. [16] A book of Shakespeare's plays lay at his side, opened at act IV, scene 7 of Hamlet, where the King says:

To thine own peace. If he be now return'd—
As checking at his voyage, and that he means
No more to undertake it,—I will work him
To exploit, now ripe in my device,
Under the which he shall not choose but fall:
And for his death no wind shall breathe;
But even his mother shall uncharged the practice
And call it accident.

Timothy Billings 和 Christopher Bush 對維克多·謝閣蘭在【Stèles古今碑錄】每一首詩前所摘錄的一句話中國古籍經典語錄的最原始來源進行了詳細考證。就我個人的閱歷而言,基本上不會有比他們二人的考證做得更好了。也正是這本注釋本,使我差不多能全方位地體會到謝閣蘭 Stèles 創作背后的“幾乎一切”的思考。

1909年他動身去“我的首都”北京,居住四年多後,1914年因一次大戰爆發返法。……謝閣蘭在這次與愛德華·沙畹(Édouard CHAVANNES, 1865 – 1918年)合作的考察中除留下筆記外,還有速描和一些大型雕塑的照片,透過他在光線和取景顯出的天賦,使其成為中華帝國末世中最具才華的攝影家。中國在他的眼裡變成:“和諧差異之典範,世界多樣化之縮影”。

En 1909, il partira pour Pékin « ma capitale » où il séjournera plus de quatre ans avant de rentrer en France en 1914 à cause de la première guerre mondiale. ...

Pendant cette expédition qu'il mène en association avec Edouard Chavannes (1865 – 1918), l'auteur ajoute à ses notes écrites des croquis et des prises de vues de statues monumentales avec un sens inné des cadrages et des éclairages qui hisse Segalen au rang de photographe le plus talentueux de cette Chine impériale finissante. L'empire du milieu devient à ses yeux « Le pays exemplaire de la différence harmonieuse, un abrégé de la diversité du monde ».

In 1909, he set out for Peking he called it "my capital" and spent more than four years there before returning to France in 1914 at the outbreak of war. ...

In the course of the expedition, which he led along with Edouard Chavannes (1865 – 1918), Segalen complemented his written notes with sketches and photographs of monumental statuary. Revealing an innate sense of composition and lighting, he ranks as the most talented photographer of the twilight period of Imperial China. In his eyes, the Middle Kingdom became "the country that epitomizes harmonious difference, the diversity of the world in a nutshell...". ...

維克多·謝閣蘭(Victor Segalen, 1878 – 1919)的1909 – 1914 與1917年中國之行留下了大量人文紀實與考古照片[13.1-2]。在此期間他陸續寫成【Stèles古今碑錄】和其它關于中國的筆記、小說、論文。他對中國歷代的皇陵雕塑進行了記錄并寫作了Chine. La Grande Statuaire chinoise [13.2],別有個人視角的趣味——雖然這本論著遠非完備與科學水準。他關注的皇陵如陜西臨潼秦始皇陵、西安唐歷代皇陵、北京明十三陵、南京六朝皇陵遺跡等。他拍攝了大量照片,許多照片的選景、構圖及之于其作者所希望承載的文化歷史內涵的思考是大師級的,說明他并非“到此一游”而實為“按圖索驥”,行前做足了功課。當然,1914年的中國考察,奧古斯都·吉爾伯特-德-瓦桑(Augusto GILBERT de VOISINS,1877 – 1939)和讓·勒迪歸(Jean LARTIGUE,1886 – 1940)也參與拍攝了大量照片[13.1]。

L'une des photographies les plus connues de Victor Segalen est celle qui le représente, en 1910, dans son bureau à Pékin. Tous les objets déposés sur le bureau sont chinois. Un chameau T'ang, une cloche de pagode, un vase Ming côtoient une stèle (en soie) "tombant du plafond au plancher", une estampe..."J'habite une chambre aux porcelaines, un palais dur et brillant où l'imaginaire se plaît", écrivait-il dans dans Equipée. Amateur d'art, collectionneur et conservateur, Segalen est d'abord attaché à la Chine. "Enfin, Pékin, ma ville", devait-il écrire dans sa première lettre de la capitale. Devenu écrivain, Segalen n'a pourtant jamais oublié qu'il était médecin. De Papeete en Chine et en Bretagne, il exerça son art, souvent avec courage. En 1911, il fut envoyé sur sa demande à Shanhaiguan pour combattre une épidémie de peste qui fera cinquante mille morts. Il enseigna ensuite la physiologie à l'école de médecine chinoise.

S63 Runaway Charior (CHAR EMPORTÉ)
駉駉牧馬在之野

The central trope of this stele is adapted from Ode 297 in the The Book of Odes 詩經, a very lyrical ode that consists of four nearly identical stanzas with only slight variations in diction. The epigraph is drawn from the opening lines (in bold), which are repeated in each stanza. The headnote in italics and first stanza from Couvreur’s edition read as follows:

Xī, prince of Lu (659 - 626 ), extends his watchfulness over all branches of administration. He gives intelligent care to the raising of horses.

Fat and large are the horses in the plains near the frontiers. Among the fat and large horses, some are black with white legs, and others light yellow; others are black, and others are yellow. They are excellent for pulling carriages. The thoughts of the prince have a limitless reach; he thinks of his horses, and they are good.

Hī, prince de Lou (659 –626 ), etend sa vigilance a toutes les branches de l'administration. Il donne des soins intelligents a l'elevage des chevaux.

Des chevaux grands et gras sont dans les plaines près des frontières. Parmi ces chevaux grands et gras, les uns sont noirs et ont les cuisses blanches, les autres sont jaune pales; d’autres sont noirs, d'autres sont jaunes. Pour trainer les voitures ils sont excellents. Les pensees du prince ont une etendue sans limite; il pense aux chevaux, et les chevaux sont bons.

維克多·謝閣蘭(Victor Segalen, 1878 – 1919)散文詩集【Stèles(古今碑錄)】第63首詩是【CHAR EMPORTÉ駧駧牡馬在之野】。該詩題引的中國古典語錄來源于【詩經:魯頌·駧】首句。

文獻中通常把【詩經:魯頌·】首節末句“思無疆思馬斯臧”之“臧”字解釋為該字本義“善”,這樣看起來每節末句最后一字的用法更為對仗工整了。其實不妨把“臧”字解釋為其上古文字之本字“藏(收藏,所藏)”,這樣理解后,【駉】的詩意更為曠遠,也與末句“思無邪思馬斯徂”的意境遙相呼應。——這只是我個人的理解意愿,讀者可不以為意。或希望讀者注意到上古詩篇中,并非嚴格注重詞句的對仗。“臧”通“藏”的用法如“繁啟蕃長於春夏,畜積收臧於秋冬(【荀子·天論】)”。

The Praise-Odes Of LOO

  As the pieces of Book I. are called the Sung of Chow, so those of this Book are called the Sung of Loo. It is impossible, however, to render Sung by the same term or terms in both cases, for we have not in this Book " Sacrificial odes. "

  Choo He says:--" King Ching, because of the great services rendered to the kingdom by the duke of Chow, granted to Pih-k'in [the duke's eldest son, and the first marquis of Loo,] the privilege of using the royal ceremonies and music, in consequence of which Loo had its Sung, which were sung to the music in its ancestral temples.  Afterwards they made in Loo other odes in praise of their rulers, which they also called Sung."   In this way it is endeavoured to account for there being such pieces as the four in this Book in this Part of the She.   Confucius found them, we are to suppose, in Loo, bearing the name of Sung; and it was not for him to do otherwise than simply edit them as he did,  and he thereby did not commit himself to anything like an approval of their designation. This is, perhaps, the best explanation of the name that can be given; but it is not complimentary to the discrimination of the sage.

  It has often been asked why there are no Fung of Loo in the 1st Part. The question cannot be answered further than by saying that the pieces of this Book are really Fung; but as they were wantonly called Sung, we have them introduced here instead of being inserted in their proper place.

  Loo was one of the States of the east, having its capital in K'ëuh-fow, which is still the name of one of the districts in the department of Yen- chow, Shan-tung.  Choo says that king Ching appointed the duke of Chow's eldest son directly to it.  Sze-ma Ts'ëen's account is rather different :-- that the duke of Chow was himself appointed marquis of Loo, but that, being unable to go there himself in consequence of his duties at the court, he sent his eldest son instead; and that the territory was largely augmented after the termination of his regency, though he still continued to remain at court.

  The Këung; narrative.     CELEBRATING SOME MARQUIS OF LOO FOR HIS  CONSTANT  AND  ADMIRABLE  THOUGHTFULNESS, ESPECIALLY  AS SEEN IN THE NUMBER AND QUALITY OF HIS HORSES.

  The Preface says that the marquis was Shin, known as duke He ( B.C. 658 – 626).  It refers, indeed, all the four pieces of the Book to him ; but it is only the fourth, of which it can be said with certainty that it belonged to his time.

  Confucius, in the Analects, II. ii., says, " In the Book of Poetry are three hundred pieces, but the design of all of them may be embraced in that one sentence ; --' Have no depraved thoughts.' "  " That one sen- tence " is the last line but one in this piece, the declaration about the marquis who is celebrated being given by the sage as if it were a general imperative injunction.  That the sage should have selected a sentence from such a piece as this to convey his own idea as to the scope and tendency of all these ancient poems is surprising.  It is only less so, and it is peculiarly Chinese, that this characteristic of the prince should be referred to as the cause of the serviceableness of his horses.


      1  On the wide plains , our frontiers near ,
          The stallions , sleek and large , appear .
          There , sleek and large , they meet our sight ;
          Some black , with their hind-quarters white ;
          Pale yellow , some ; some black ; some bay : --
          For carriage teams good horses they !
To the duke's thoughts we can assign no bound ;
Turned to his steeds, lo ! thus good are they found !

      2  On the wide plains , our frontiers near ,
          The stallions , sleek and large , appear .
          There , sleek and large , are seen ;
          Some piebald , -- white and flushed with green ,
          And others white , with yellow sheen ;
          Some chestnuts ; and some dapple gray :--
          For carriage teams strong horses they !
To the duke's thoughts no limit can we set ;
Turned to his steeds, such is the strength they get !

      3  On the wide plains , our frontiers near ,
          The stallions , sleek and large , appear .
          Oh ! sleek and large , those sprightly males !
          Some that appear as flecked with scales ;
          Some black , with manes of spotless white ;
          Some white or red , manes dark as night :--
          In carriage yoked , obedient quite !
The duke's thoughts never cease and never tire ;
Turned to his steeds , lo ! thus they rule their fire !

      4  On the wide plains , our frontiers near ,
          The stallions , sleek and large, appear .
          Oh ! sleek and large , those stallions bright !
          Cream-coloured , some ; some , red and white ;
          Some , with white hairy legs ; white eyes
          Like those of fishes , some :-- men prize
          Such horses , grand in strength and size !
His thoughts without depravity , our prince
Thinks of his steeds , and such powers they evince !

Notes: Manuscript of " SHE KING : The Praise-Odes of LOO : Tung " had been found by Paul PELLIOT (1878 - 1945) in Touen-houang, CHINA. The translation of the poem's title is after that of James Legge, which has one different word of Tung. This major revision has been made in according to the manuscript ( Pelliot chinois Touen-houang 3737 ). And I deduced that this manuscript presented a rather original version of the poem, which was annotated by Xuan ZHENG ( 127 - 200 ). That is, the timeline of this version of SHE KING is ALMOST before the period of Yingda KONG ( 574 - 648 ).
