《惟儼 (751-834)·枯榮》:是枯是榮?可是枯榮有何意義呢?隨它去好了。這是你的信賴與尊從。
唐代的药山惟俨禅师在湖南药山开坛说法时,手下有三名著名弟子:道吾、云岩和高沙弥。
药山的禅院里面生长着两棵枝干如虬龙一般的大树,但一棵已枯,另一棵却枝繁叶茂。
一天,惟俨指着两棵树问道吾:“是说枯的对,还是说荣的对?” 道吾说:“荣的对。”
惟俨道:“灼然一切处,光明灿烂去。”
又问云岩,云岩说:“枯的对。”
惟俨道:“灼然一切处,放教枯澹去。”
这时,高沙弥从殿内走来,听到这个问答,就随口答道:“枯的随它枯吧,荣的随他荣吧。”

禅宗认为自性绝对如一,超越肯定与否定。在这一则公案中,惟俨以枯为否定,荣为肯定,向弟子提问。道吾执着于肯定,云岩执着于否定,都被惟俨否决了。只有高沙弥回答得较为得体,枯荣有何意义呢?随它去好了。

《裴休 (791-864)·古德在哪里》:“遺像在這裏,古德在哪里?”你找他,他就在你心裏 (心即是佛)。

唐代著名宰相裴休不但在治国上是个出类拔萃的人才,还是一位崇信三宝的居士。
裴休坐镇淮泗的时候,曾到境内一个寺院礼佛。
他在佛堂上看到一尊古德的遗像,便问陪同的僧人:“遗像在这里,古德在哪里?”
僧人不知如何作答,裴休感到很失望,便问道:“这寺院内有禅师吗?”
僧人说:“有个搭挂本寺正在负责给菜园浇水的和尚,听说他懂佛法。”
于是裴休命僧人便叫他前来。那浇水僧人正是黄檗大师
裴休把那问题重复了一遍:“遗像在这里,古德在哪里?”
黄檗大喝一声:“裴休!”
裴休自然地答应了一声:“在!”
黄檗用手一指:“这便是了。”
裴休突然领悟,心中有说不出的愉快。他赶忙向裴休施礼,恭敬地请他住洪州的大安寺说法。
禅宗主张自性超越时间和空间。黄檗以裴休为古德,把二者等同起来,在时间超越了古今,在空间上超越了我。裴休和古德形状体貌虽然不同,但湛然的真心有何差别呢?杜顺大师曾经说过:
青州牛吃草,益州马腹胀。
天下觅医人,灸猪左臂上。

問道吾曰:“枯者是,榮者是?”吾曰:“榮者是。”
師曰:“灼然一切處,光明燦爛去。”
又問雲岩:“枯者是,榮者是?”岩曰:“枯者是。”
師曰:“灼然一切處,放教枯淡去。
高沙彌忽至,師曰:“枯者是,榮者是?”彌曰:“枯者從他枯,榮者從他榮。”
師顧道吾、雲岩曰:“不是,不是。”

Biography & Calligraphy by PEI Xiu (791-864) in 855 or about 1 year before. Title notes on this work by LIU Gong-Quan (778-865). The carved stone, made in 855 (TANG Dynasty), is now preserved in the Cao-Tang Temple (Temple of the Straw House), Hu County, Shaanxi, CHINA.
The reproduced image of the stele rubbings shows the title and the first author PEI Xiu and his affiliations. The scripts should be read vertically (top-to-down), from the right to the left on the page.
