遗忘属于那些精心珍藏的事物，在维克洛郡的十二月，一棵伐木场的赤杨丢掉了根系，因为它把它深藏在土里。
出版社打电话过来的时候，我发现时间还很多，生活并没有逼促我。
远方的父亲请人翻修花园，土壤里竟挖出了我童年时的玩具，居然未朽。喜欢玩笑的父亲问我，百年后的他是否也会如此。天知道，“为什么不长成那棵雪松的躯干？”我反问。
即使画上句号，一切
也不会停止
鲜花和野草会代替我们思考
一棵风撼不动的树是自由的，它们无需奔波。詹姆斯•芬顿说他爱上了柏林郊外高树上唱歌的一只白嘴鸦，那么美妙的语言，肯定来自遥远的国度，芬顿在梦中用烟囱帽子把它带走了，他用风干的手指端起朗姆酒的时候会问自己，那顶黑色的烟囱帽子藏在哪里？

James Fenton (詹姆斯•芬顿) 英国当代诗人、文学批评家、牛津大学诗学教授。1949年出生于林肯郡的一个英国国教牧师家庭，1967年进入牛津大学马格德林学院(Magdalen College, Oxford)跟随诗人约翰•富勒研究英语文学。在牛津就读期间，曾获纽迪吉特诗歌奖，并与W. H. Auden建立友谊，直到1973年Auden去世，Fenton说Auden的影响对于他而言“是一个起点”。牛津毕业后，曾在英格兰、越南和德国从事记者职业，并担任《星期日时报》专栏作者，1994年起担任牛津诗学教授，现居牛津。 出版有《终碛》（1972）、《一座空屋的合法占有》（1978）、《德意志安魂曲》（1980）、《死去的士兵》（1981）、《战争的记忆》（1982）、《脱离危险》（1993）、《诗歌的力量》（2001）。
